Super Bowl Video: Suzuki Kizashi Chased by Evil Snowmen

With the Super Bowl XLV rumored to reach out to a
record number of viewers this year, it’s no surprise that automakers are queuing up to take a shot at convincing potential customers to buy their products.

Suzuki’s focus will be on the Kizashi sedan, featured in a TV spot called “Wicked Weather”. The clip shows the all-wheel drive version as it’s being chased by a pack of evil, almost-zombie-like snowmen. While it sounds like an idea uttered in at an Amsterdam café, the CGI is convincing and the Japanese sedan seems to cope well with the snowy roads. Hit the jump to see the video.

This is Suzuki’s first appearance at the Super Bowl and the ad is going to be broadcast in 19 markets, located in the Eastern and Southeastern part of the U.S., as the manufacturer strives to recover from last year’s dwindling sales.

Suzuki Launches 4x4 Variants of New Swift and Kizashi in Germany

Suzuki is broadening its European lineup with the launch of all-wheel drive variants of its newly introduced 2011 Swift supermini and Kizashi sedan. Starting with the Swift, the 4x4 model is offered exclusively with a 94-horsepower 1.2-liter gasoline engine linked to a 5-speed manual gearbox. The company said it returns a fuel economy of 6.7 lt/100km urban, 4.9 lt/100km highway and 5.5 lt/100km combined, with CO2 emissions of 129g/km.

The five-door Swift 4x4 is priced in Germany at €14,490 [US$21,000] with standard features including air conditioning and an MP3-capable CD radio with steering wheel controls and a USB port.

The Kizashi 4x4 sedan features Suzuki's so-called intelligent all-wheel drive system (i-AWD), which allows the driver to manually switch the car from front- to all-wheel drive with the push of a button, with power coming from a 178HP-strong 2.4-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine paired to a continuously variable automatic transmission.

According to the Japanese automaker, the Kizashi 4x4 averages 11.3 lt/100km in the city, 6.6 lt/100km on highway and 8.3 lt/100km on the combined cycle, with CO2 emissions of 191 g/km.

Prices in Germany start from €29,900 [US$41,000]. The standard equipment package features a two-zone automatic climate control, Xenon headlights, ten-way power adjustable and heated driver's seat with memory function, and more.

VIDEO: Suzuki Pits Kizashi Against Mercedes C-Class, Audi A4 and Volvo S40 in New Ads

Even though Suzuki had high hopes for the new Kizashi, sales of the sedan model haven't exactly blown the socks out of anyone this year. In fact, in the U.S
., Suzuki has only managed to deliver a mere 5,269 units of the four-door saloon through November. Do the math and that comes to under 500 cars a month.

But the Japanese automaker isn't about to throw in the towel, not just yet. Marking one of its largest advertising campaigns in years, Suzuki has launched an ambition set of edgy ads pitting the Kizashi against similar sized models in the luxury segment such as the Mercedes-Benz C350, Audi A4 and the Volvo S40.

In each case, the Kizashi is shown in a side-by-side test with one of the aforementioned models plus an outsider, and by that we mean a motorized sofa, a man covered in a bubble-wrap suit and a stretch limousine. Well, you can't blame Suzuki for not having a sense of humor. Scroll down to watch all three ads in the videos below.

More than 5,000 Suzuki Kizashi Sedans Recalled Over Glove Box Glitch

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Suzuki's U.S. division is recalling a total of 5,701 Kizashi sedans manufactured from October 13, 2009 through May 31, 2010. The reason? The safety agency said that the center-lower glove box on the dashboard may open during a crash and possibly cause injury if it comes in contact with the front passengers.

Suzuki said that it will replace the part on the affected cars free of charge. The company plans to notify owners with the safety recall expected to begin in mid-July. For more information, Kizashi owners can contact Suzuki directly at 1-714-996-7040.

European Suzuki Kizashi Sedan to Bow at Geneva Motor Show

At this year's International Motor Show in Geneva in the beginning of March, Suzuki will unveil the European market version of its new Kizashi saloon that's already on sale in North America and Japan. In Europe, Suzuki's mid-size sedan will play in the D-segment rivaling cars such as the Ford Mondeo, Citroen C5, Toyota Avensis, VW Passat and Opel Insignia.

The company said that it will offer the Kizashi with all-wheel drive as standard while power will be provided by the same 2.4-liter gasoline engine used on the N.A.-spec model.

The four-cylinder unit churns out 185 HP when linked to a six-speed manual gearbox and 178HP when mated to a CVT.

The Japanese maker is also planning to expand the Kizashi's range in the very near future with a more powerful V6 petrol engine as well as a hybrid version, though it is not clear if these variants will make it to Europe.

We don't know yet if it's technically feasible (and economically viable), but Suzuki's recent tie up with Volkswagen could see the Kizashi sedan being offered with a much-needed in Europe, diesel engine sourced from the German Group.

Together with the Kizashi, Suzuki will also display in Geneva the Swift Plug-in Hybrid that was first introduced at last fall's Tokyo Motor Show as well as new variants of the three-and five-door Grand Vitara with a redesigned rear hatch that does away with the spare tire box.

My Two Styling Dents on the New Suzuki Kizashi Sedan

"They make cars?" used to be the common response when asking people about Suzuki's automobile offerings. That's about to change, though, because the runt of the Japanese litter has decided to go head to head against the first-stringers. With its Kizashi mid-size sedan, Suzuki thinks it knows what mid-size car buyers want, but the big question is: how can this stubby mid-sizer hope to compete?

For the time being Suzuki is playing it smart and starting out simple, offering a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder with either a 6-speed stick or a CVT. The controllable all-wheel drive system is a nice option in the segment, and with a V6 and hybrid rumored to be in the works, this mid-size saloon should be more than ready to take on the world (putting a few more nails into the Mitsubishi Galant's coffin...).

In the cockpit is where the Kizashi scores some serious points. Compared to its contemporaries, it's easy to tell time was invested in designing it for driver/passenger comfort, ease of use, and a sport-luxury ambiance - apparently I'll hold off quality opinions until I feel the polymers with my own bare hands.

The Kizashi's center stack doesn't choke you with switches, but it doesn't bore you to death, either (take a look at those metallic fangs).

For comparison, the Toyota Camry's dash is to the point, but oh so boring. There's nothing there that stands out. Add to that the top-heavy, anorexic-Dolly Parton gated shifter and you have an interior that's as charismatic as a corpse. In fact, I feel like I'm aging just looking at it.

The Honda Accord's dash layout is a step up from the Camry, but not by much. At least Honda's "robot designers" threw in some bisecting lines, making it more stylish than the Camry but drowning drivers in buttons and knobs.

Also, to let everyone know that the Kizashi isn't messing around in the entertainment department, there's an available Rockford Fosgate sound system to go up against Toyota's optional JBL stereo setup and Honda's "premium" one.

From the outside, the Kizashi is possibly the most youthful in the segment. I like its tough, chunky form and stubby up-ticked rear, but that doesn't blind me to the fact that it's lines are far from original.

Easily identifiable on the production model is a blend of the Kizashi concepts' facial features with those of VW's Jetta (the proportions seem much better than the Jetta, though). Now follow the sculpted line along either side of the hood, up the A-pillar, over the flared fenders and back towards the trunk. While admiring the rear three-quarter view you'll see hints of Toyota's Mark X sedan.

Below the rear bumper, you'll either like those geometric tailpipe surrounds or you won't. They're not the best part of the car, but at least the exhaust pipes can be seen inside them (unlike the superfluous faux exhaust tips found on the . . . ahem . . . nigh-$60,000 Lexus IS-F). Up above, I would have liked that third brake light mounted flush in the trunk lid, but that's a minor deal that shouldn't deter anyone from taking a look at this car.

More and more it seems like Suzuki has a potential winner on its hands, one that could draw plenty of people out of the competition's showrooms. The runt has put out a cute and butch car that, if there isn't a whole lot of brand loyalty in one's diet, may get some serious attention over the next few years. Now if only they would release the rest of the specs. After all, those mid-size sedan buyers are a finicky lot.

Suzuki Reportedly Cancels 2010 Kizashi Sedan

According to a report in Japan's daily business newspaper, Nikkei, Suzuki has 'shelved plans' to introduce the production version of the Kizashi concept vehicle series. Suzuki's planned midsize sedan, blueprints of which had been leaked into the internet last September, was supposed to debut in 2009 with sales starting in early 2010. Not surprisingly, the article in Nikkei supports that the reason why Suzuki has (allegedly) postponed the presentation of its Mazda6 and Honda Accord rival, is the sharp deterioration in global auto sales.

The Nikkei report also said that Suzuki will push back plans to open new plants in Russia and Thailand in 2010.

Even though we have no reason to doubt Nikkei's report, we would like to hear an official announcement from Suzuki before we make any conclusions, especially in what concerns the future of the Kizashi.

2010 Suzuki Kizashi Official Sketches Leak Online – Who Killed the Concept?

Suzuki Kizashi Sketches 2010We knew that the last of the Kizashi concept studies that made its debut at this year’s New York Auto Show was too good to be true and that Suzuki would definitely tone down the mid-size sedan’s appearance when it enters production in 2009, but looking at these latest official sketches that were registered by the Japanese automaker at the European trademark office makes us wonder what the hell happened to the original concept.

If these design drawings are of any indication to as where Suzuki is heading with the production Kizashi that will compete against the Mazda6 and Honda Accord, we’ll be talking about a humongous blunder from the behalf of the Japanese firm as the NY Show concept really caught our attention with its sleek design and powerful stance. -Continued
